Loneliness

How To Combat Loneliness As A Startup Founder

To outsiders, the life of an entrepreneur seems elegant. You wake up when you want, attend fancy parties, receive startup awards, do media interviews, brunch with clients, and more. But what we see from Instagram, TV shows, and movies are just the shiner aspects of a startup business.

Behind the scenes, the entrepreneurship road is very tough. Startup founders risk financial ruin, work incredibly long hours, and are forced to make personal sacrifices to see their businesses up and running. And despite all the effort, only about 20% of the startup businesses make it past the 18 months mark.

This is why being a company founder is among the loneliest jobs in the world. If you are an entrepreneur, this is the post for you. in it, you’ll learn some practical approaches to combat loneliness as a startup founder.

Let’s get started!

Six ways to deal with loneliness as a startup founder

Loneliness can be a massive detriment to your business and your health. It can suck away your energy and suffocate your creativity, leading to business failure.

And although there are no standard signs of loneliness, recognising some symptoms, like stress, anxiety, sleeping disorders, and compulsive behaviours, is the first step to combating the problem.

Here are a few other ideas for combating loneliness and improving your mental well-being as an entrepreneur:

Method #1: Exercise regularly

A good exercise routine is one of the best ways for startup founders to manage loneliness. It improves your cognitive abilities, reduces stress, and improves your physical and mental health. In fact, about 90% of UK residents believe that exercising helps reduce their feelings of loneliness, increase feelings of calm, enhance mental and physical health, and make them more energized.

Moreover, exercising can improve your productivity and increase your focus and confidence. This will improve your abilities as an effective communicator and leader, two essential qualities for a startup business.

Method #2: Meditate

Meditation doesn’t have the best reputation among business personnel mainly because it conjures up images of people making the ‘Ommm’ sounds and staying in a strange position. However, deep thinking and meditation on relaxing music is a benign experience that offers you more benefits than you can imagine.

Scientifically, meditation;

  1. Improves your cognitive abilities: Research suggests that meditation can improve several cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and executive function.
  2. Reduces anxiety and depression: One of the main signs of loneliness is stress and anxiety. Meditating gives you a sense of calm, balance, and peace, which helps reduce stress and depression.
  3. Improves your sleep quality: Mindfulness meditation effectively reduces the negative impacts of loneliness, including emotional reactivity and ruminative thoughts, which improves your sleep quality.

Here are a few simple exercises to help you practice meditation:

  1. Lie or sit comfortably. Some individuals invest in meditation cushions or chairs
  2. Close your eyes. You may use an eye mask
  3. Breathe naturally, without controlling it
  4. Focus on your breath and how your body moves when you inhale and exhale. Pay attention to your body’s movement as you breathe and observe your shoulders, chest, belly, and rib cage
  5. Allow your mind to be free, only focusing on your breath

Method #3: Create a routine

Creating a structure around our lives creates stability – which is why a routine among entrepreneurs should be a no-brainer. A routine helps you start your day the right way and wind it down in a way that fulfils you. It helps you counter feelings of uncertainty and loneliness.

Of course, making such activities as healthy eating, exercise, and adequate rest a habit will benefit your physical health, too. But research shows that these routines can also boost your mental health.

Entrepreneurs have no one-size-fits-all routines, so build yours around your business objectives, interests, and needs. Below are some of the routines that have effectively promoted startup founder well-being.

  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Healthy meals
  • Reading books
  • Waking up early
  • Setting and reviewing goals
  • Getting a family time

Block out time in the morning and evening for these routine activities, and your moods and general well-being will improve. They’ll help create a structure in your life, making the loneliness and uncertainty of running a startup less chaotic.

Method #4: Join a co-working space

For those startup founders that crave social interaction, joining a co-working space can help manage their loneliness. Not only does it give you the chance to collaborate in person with your team, but it also helps you meet other startup founders.

Being surrounded by like-minded individuals every day will give you a renewed sense of energy, improving your general well-being. Even better, the network can provide outstanding support and resources that can be valuable to your business.

Method #5: Set time for social activities

Research shows that about 29% of small business owners work more than 50 hours a week. And that’s understandable because they want their business to excel by every means possible. However, don’t forget that you have a life outside your business.

Set aside time for family and friends. They are your ‘mental health foundation.’ You will likely experience more loneliness without your loved ones, and your business will suffer. Familiarity breeds contempt and your friends and family usually have to listen to your complaints and face the stress of your business startup.

Make time to appreciate life and your relationships. Forget work and go out for lunch or dinner with your loved ones.

Method #6: Seek Help

When the pressure from your startup is too much, you may all the more feel to be alone in your journey. However, talking to like-minded people like business owners and startup founders will help you realise you are not alone.

As a startup founder, you should never shy away from seeking help from your team members or peers. Figuring things out yourself isn’t easy, and having a strong team makes the entrepreneurship road less tough.

Join entrepreneurship groups or hire a coach to help guide you through your entrepreneurship journey. You can also get a partner or co-founder to help with decision-making and funding. Whatever you do, ensure you aren’t alone in the journey.

The bottom line

There you have it, folks: the six best methods to combat loneliness as a startup founder. Recognising some symptoms is the first step to combating the problem. Then you can use methods like meditation, joining a co-working space, and physical exercises to deal with it.

We used MBE for 2 years. £30 a month - all to the franchise owner btw. Our local office franchisee, who were great, closed - and we had to urgently move our mailing address. After three failed attempts to various other offices, no email responses and trying to deal with a completely useless 'I'm not an AI account' that was managing to work 24 hours a day it was clearly time to move on somewhere that actually knew what they were doing and we found Clyde Offices and decided to try and run with them and needed it sorted quickly since we were leaving the UK for a week. Registered at late p.m. and all sorted by 10 a.m. Couldn't be a better experience so far.
